Summary

Orex has just achieved the rank of captain after serving as executive officer on board the Manticore-class USS Defense. The USS San Diego is Orex’s first command and the support role mission of the San Diego is going to take some adjustment. Orex is at once grateful and slightly disappointed with his command assignment.

Appearance

Orex is typical of his species, brownish-orange skin and a tripodal body structure. A bit taller than average for his species, he stands at 1.9 meters. He has a stern demeanor and tends to stand ramrod straight, especially while on the bridge. He has the yellow, cat-like eyes of his people that look particularly bright and fierce with his stoic face.

Personality

Despite his stern countenance and rigid posture, Orex is quite approachable, given to a gruff sort of humor. He is a good hearted soul that will give advice and genuine empathy to anyone from the XO all the way down to the most junior crewman. He honestly enjoys humor and is a student of comedy ranging from human stand up to Andorian comedic plays. He often watches such things in his downtime. All this means that when he is pushed to giving a dressing down, they can be a sight to behold and had achieved legendary status on the Defense.

History

Early Life (2359-2378)

Orex grew up on Edos in a medium sized settlement called Borvel. As is not uncommon in Edosian society, Orex grew up very closely with his extended family. This instilled in Orex a sense of family and serving the greater good that has stayed with him throughout his life. A bit of a tinkerer by nature, Orex was always seeing how things worked. It didn’t matter if it was a PADD or a piece of farming equipment, Orex was always trying to find out how it worked.

He became an excellent student in his settlements educational academy, especially in the fields of engineering, math and basic warp theory. An affable man and well liked amongst his peers, Orex seemed destined to be an engineer. This was further reinforced when Orex made the decision to join Starfleet as an engineer, hoping to work on starships. As the Dominion War was fresh in his family’s minds, this caused no small amount of worry but Orex stood firm and passed the entrance exam, leading to his departure to Earth in 2378.

Starfleet Academy (2378-2382)

Orex’s time at Starfleet Academy was rather normal. He did well with his studies, helped his fellow cadets when he could and stayed out of trouble. He was noted for his curiosity, work ethic and leadership potential. His instructors often put Orex in charge of group projects and assignments and Orex always rose to the occasion. He graduated in the upper quarter in his class.

USS Zhukov (NCC 62136) (2382-2387)

Orex’s tour of duty on the Zhukov was generally a calm one as the Zhukov spent much of it’s time on diplomatic and humanitarian missions. He proved himself an able and hard working engineer. Marked for his competence and reliability, Orex achieved the rank of Lt (j.g.) rather quickly. His leadership ability once more began to show and he was well liked and respected by both his peers and superiors. After achieving the rank of Lieutenant, Orex was transferred to the USS Dorvall.

USS Dorvall/Engineering (NCC 70449) (2387-2388)

Orex continued providing solid and dependable service on the Dorvall’s engineering staff. His continued hard work and leadership shined through. This was reinforced when the Dorvall encountered an unknown and possibly sentient energy field that caused havoc with the ship’s systems and caused widespread damage and casualties on the ship due to overloads and structural damage as it was held in the field’s grasp. The ship’s Chief Engineer and several of the engineering crew were amongst the casualties. Immediately Orex took charge and was able to devise a way to recalibrate the shields to both push and shock the field long enough for the Nebula-class starship to limp off. As the field showed signs of pursuit Orex, at great risk to himself, went into the structurally damaged Jeffries’ Tubes to manually realign several live power conduits, reestablishing warp power and allowing the stricken starship to escape. Orex was decorated for this selfless act and the ship’s captain had a discussion about Orex laterally transferring to Flight Ops and entering the command track, to which Orex agreed.

USS Dorvall/Flight Officer (NCC 70449) (2388-2392)

Orex’s exemplary service carried over to Flight Ops. Given he had a love of piloting that matched his love for engineering, he threw himself into his new position with gusto and quickly became a more than proficient and trusted flight officer. After the Dorvall completed it’s exploratory mission in 2392, Orex received his promotion to Lieutenant Commander and was transferred to the USS Mobile Bay as her Senior Flight Officer

USS Mobile Bay (NCC 65349) (2392-2396)

Orex’s leadership abilities shone through as head of Flight Ops and he adapted well to the more tactical nature of the Akira-class vessel. He continued to hone both his own and the junior flight officer’s skills. His empathy and approachability made him popular with the crew once they saw past his outwardly stern demeanor. He was no pushover though and had no issue taking a junior to task, particularly for self centered acts. While he saw no action on his tour of duty, his time on the Mobile Bay proved invaluable to his training as a leader and commander of Starfleet personnel. He received his promotion to Commander in 2396 and was transferred to the USS Defense as her new executive officer.

USS Defense (NCC 92219) (2396-2402)

Orex proved to be a capable and thoughtful executive officer. He was a major part of the officer development programs almost from the beginning and his empathy allowed him to connect with officers from the myriad of species and cultures onboard quite well. Having just come from a tactical assignment, he had less adjusting to do onboard the Manticore-class vessel then he had onboard the Mobile Bay. The captain of the Defense made note of Orex’s capability of developing young officers, steadiness under pressure and ability to lead and gladly recommended his promotion to captain in 2401. By the end of the year Orex had received orders to take command of the USS San Diego.

USS San Diego (NCC 75582) (2402-Present)

Captain Orex has arrived onboard the San Diego in the beginning of 2402 as she completes a minor refit and crew rotation, including most of the senior staff. She will be on a on call basis for at least the next several months.
