Zane Bates

Zane Shaw Bates was born on November 17th, 2364 to parents of Olivia Bates and Adam Shaw. Both his parents were away on maternity leave, approved by their Commanding Officer when Zane was born but they only got a few weeks to spend with him before they had to hand him off to his father’s parents. This is due to the fact that he was born during the Federation-Cardassian War and his parents were both senior officers on board the USS Okinawa. Unfortunately for Zane though, a year later his father passed away, someone he never got the chance to get to know. It wasn’t until after the Cardassians signed the treaty in 2370 when Zane was allowed to be with his mother, since she remained on board the USS Okinawa and the Okinawa conducted patrols along the border since the Truce began in 2366.

Being with his grandparents for six years was hard on him, only able to see what his father looked like through pictures and knowing what he was like through his parents that Zane stayed with, only getting to see his mother through a screen whenever she got the chance to transmit and pretty much his childhood being not as enjoyable as most children would have. But he did try to make it the best that he can, as whenever he got the chance to talk to his mother, he would tell her all about his day, the kids he met on his first day of school, the little scrape he got on his knee when he first fell, the first tree he climbed; it was the fact that after being sad for so long at such a young age, deep down he had decided that he wasn’t going to be sad anymore and he wanted to ensure his mother that he was okay.

So when 2370 came, the treaty was signed, and the risk of conflict dropped considerably, his mother had come to Earth and taken him with her to her new assignment. Due to experience and the fact that she had been the First Officer for a while on the Okinawa, she was now the Captain of one of the Galaxy Class starships, and with the knowledge of a long exploration mission, she planned on spending every second of free time she had with her son. So Zane spent twelve years on board his mother’s ship, going to school, learning much about starship systems, and even taking a liking to Tactical and Security, especially considering that his mother pretty much fed him all the goodies about the job. Thus, when Zane became of age, he took his exams for the Academy and passed, thus on 2382, Zane entered Starfleet Academy, where he spent the four required years and graduated, although not at the top of his class, which was upsetting to him, his family was proud and that made him happy.

After the Academy, Zane was assigned to board an Obena Class vessel as a Security and Tactical Officer for pretty much his entire career, making it to Assistant Chief of Security and Tactical. That is up until 2399 when an opening for Chief of Security and Tactical Officer became available, to which Zane applied and was accepted. Not long after, he was reassigned to the Sovereign as Chief of Security and Tactical. But then a year later, just after the Sovereign‘s last mission during the Blood Dilithium crisis, Zane was requested and accepted to become the Head of Security and Tactical Division on Starbase 415.
