Elbon Jakkelb

Tapping into his leadership training as a Prylar of the Bajoran faith and a Starfleet counselor, Captain Elbon Jakkelb serves the crew of the USS Almagest as its commanding officer.  Although Elbon came to Starfleet later than some –following his disillusionment with the Vedek Assembly– he practically grew up aboard the USS Dvorak as a counselor, diplomatic officer, before he committed to the command track.

Raised in an orphanage run by the Vedek Assembly, in a Bajoran refugee camp on Soltok IV, Elbon came of age amid constant rituals, structures and schedules. This has led to Elbon presenting himself as fiercely independent and yet enigmatic. His mind is an overlapping paradox, as twisted as a time-loop. He can easily hold multiple points of view at once. His default view of the world is strategic. He has a strong belief in social justice; he joined the Vedek Assembly, the Maquis resistance and Starfleet to make the galaxy a better place. He envisions himself as one small link in a greater interconnected chain; nothing exists in isolation to Elbon. Everything is linked. As much as his head prefers the clouds and the big picture, he can see the best in people. Often, he sees good in people that they can’t see themselves. He prefers to believe Bajorans are stupid, before he believes they acted in malice.

His mind is always very loud, always calculating. Analysis comes easily to him, but his analytical thinking is closely linked to passion. He doesn’t wonder about ideas for the sake of ideas. His analysis is always grounded in application and action. He is determined and idealistic about what he believes in. He will never accept good enough. Despite all that determination, his personality is fluid by nature. He recovers from setbacks and he doesn’t get stressed easily.

As a spiritual man, his belief has always come with string. He feels a strong belief in the Prophets, and yet he’s always questioning and seeking in relation to his faith. He enjoys spending time reading religious texts and, secretly, he finds great comfort in ritual. In 2375, when Kai Winn fell in the fire caves and the Starfleet Emissary was welcomed into the Celestial Temple, Elbon lost faith in the Vedek Assembly, but he never lost faith in the Prophets.

Elbon’s first instinct is to put the needs of the many over the needs of the one. In his romantic relationships, he cares little about social convention. He makes his own rules in love. He is a tactile, passionate person, very much in tune with his body and that of his partners. Despite that connection, he doesn’t believe in asking a partner to consider Elbon’s needs before their own. By offering this freedom to his romantic partners, Elbon feels entitled to be immovable as well. Where incompatibilities exist, he believes both partners are challenged to make a choice to stay together, despite the friction, or to walk away. He doesn’t believe in compromise in love; that’s a lose-lose. The rules must be changed to make it a win-win.
