History
Hey’xet was born in one of the larger cities in the mid-lattitude waters of Xelata. Their shoal was a smaller one, consisting of three elders, seven adults, and twenty youth. The collective were engineers to a one, and many of them–Hey’xet included–began specializing in extra-pelagic engineering very early on in their studies. It is a field held in high regard for both its complexity and its intrinsic physical hazards, and Hey’xet was drawn to the challenge.
A born overachiever, Hey’xet made the unusual move of pursuing studies in both engineering and art at the same time. They found that engaging their creative side through the act of sculpting gave them an edge in visualizing their engineering projects, and also just made them generally happier. They loved the social reach that working in the arts gave them, even if they were never the most talented. The unpolished roughness of their artwork was seen as charming by those who knew that the creator’s main profession was an entirely different field, and though Hey’xet never made waves in the Xelatian art world, they did make friends.
Starfleet was not a path that Hey’xet had considered initially, but when a mentor pointed out that their experience with extra-pelagic engineering gave them an arm up on other Xelatians, Hey’xet decided to pursue it.
