“When did it show up?” Alex asked, standing at the console with arms folded.

“About an hour ago,” Logan replied. “I wasn’t sure at first what it was. It’s transmitting on an old frequency. And I mean old.” He typed commands into his console to display the signal’s status.

“Whoa,” Alex released a breath.

Logan nodded, “It looks like it’s originating from this point, about 4 hours by warp.”

“Does this show up on any reports? Someone had to have found this by now.”

“Not according to the database.” Logan leaned back and clasped his hands behind his head. “But yours truly makes sure to check all the frequencies while we’re traveling.”

“So you were bored and playing around the communications system.” Alex translated.

Logan looked up at Alex, “What do you want to do, Commander?”

“It’s definitely curious,” He rubbed his chin. “Whoever created the signal has to be long gone, right? But it’s worth checking out if it’s originating from a structure.” He paused, “Starfleet protocol does state we have to respond to Federation distress signals. And it’s just good manners,” Alex smiled.

“Lay in a course, Mr. Carter, Warp 6. I’m going to the dining hall to get some coffee,” Alex walked toward the door.

“Course laid in, sir,” Logan reported.

Alex stood at the open door and looked back. Logan met his gaze, finger hovering over the confirmation button. “Oh, confirm… engage… whatever,” Alex waved away the words as he left the bridge.

“We’ve arrived, Commander,” Logan announced.

“Drop to quarter impulse,” Alex commanded. “On screen.”

The viewscreen came to life, displaying a derelict structure. Alex’s eyes widened, “Run a sensor sweep and cross-reference with the Federation database.” He stood up, “And wake the others. I want a mission briefing in fifteen minutes.” The doors to the bridge closed behind him.
